Abstract
Chronic ulcerative colitis is one of the rare diseases in Korea. Carcinoma occurs in patients with chronic ulcerative colitis much more frequently and about 10 years earlier than in the general population, and is particularily likely to occur in those who have. colitis for more than 10 years.
We have experienced 3 cases of chronic ulcerative colitis complicated with carcinoma of colorectum treated surgically.
The first and second cases in a 58 years old female and a 48 years old male, respectively were admitted with symptom of bowel obstruction and treated surgically in good results.
The third case in a 30 years old male was admitted with bowel perforation caused by ulcerative colitis and treated with left hemicolectomy and Hartmann¢¥s procedure. This patient was discharged 18 days following operation without improvement from the postoperative complication.
Many stastistics about the problem of the carcinomatous change of chronic ulcerative colitis were briefly discussed together with a limitted review of the medical literature on the subject.
